Veneers are thin shells that are laminated or cemented to the front surface of a person's teeth. They are made from either porcelain or composites. While composite veneers are okay for small chips, the porcelain variety lasts longer and is more natural looking. Therefore, it is usually the preferred option. To prepare the teeth for the veneers, the teeth must be ground down and shaved to hold the veneer. An impression is then made of the teeth to create the veneers. They are cemented into place, so they are secure. However, they may only last for 5 to ten years.
