What causes oral cancer?

Most common causes of oral cancer are chewing tobacco or using cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Heavy drinking along with using tobacco can also contribute to this condition. Bad oral hygiene can lead to oral cancer as well. Human papillomavirus is also known to cause oral cancer.

Lesions in the mouth, trouble swallowing, numbness of the mouth, changes in the structure of the mouth, changes in the voice, sore throat and bleeding from mouth sore are warning signs of oral cancer.

Tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, combined use of alcohol and tobacco, HPV16 viral infections, aging, unprotected exposure to sun for long times and not eating enough fruits and vegetables are all risk factors for developing oral cancer.

How much drinking can put you in risk of oral cancer?

If you drink more than 15 alcoholic beverages in one week, you are at greater risk. Combined use of alcohol and tobacco also puts you at risk.

What are the early indicators of oral cancer?

Red and/or white discoloration in the soft tissue of the mouth, sores that do not head within 14 days and prolonged hoarseness can be early indicators of oral cancer.
