Proper Method of Flossing

Proper Method of FlossingIt is a well-known fact that brushing is important for dental hygiene, but flossing is very often neglected, even though this is another important aspect of keeping teeth and gums healthy. Flossing your teeth should be done at least once a day.

There is a proper way to floss your teeth that will give you the best results in removing plaque. The length of your floss should be about eighteen to twenty inches. The easiest way to hold your floss is to wrap it around your index fingers until you have about an inch or two to work with. Place the floss between two teeth and slide it back and forth over the entire length of your tooth, from crown to gum and back again. You will do this for every tooth in your mouth, placing the floss in the gaps between each of your teeth and using the same back and forth motion to clean each tooth.

Every time you go to another tooth, you will use a clean portion of floss. You simply discard your dental floss when you have used the entire length of it.

When choosing your floss, you should use either the nylon or plastic version. Waxed and unwaxed floss is also available. If you have a difficult time with flossing, you may want to choose the waxed kind, as it will slide between your teeth more easily.

If you floss your teeth every time you brush them, you will be effectively removing more plaque.
