Tooth Decay and Oral Health

Tooth Decay and Oral HealthDecaying of the teeth is caused by bacteria, which can occur naturally throughout the body. Bacteria will also be produced from the breakdown of sugars from food. This breakdown creates a substance, known as plaque, which sticks to the teeth and can, in time, destroy the mineral composition of a tooth. It is important to remove all forms of plaque so that this destruction of tooth enamel and minerals does not take place.

If plaque is not properly removed and good oral hygiene habits are not practiced on a daily basis, tooth decay can occur. This process starts out as a cavity forming in the tooth. If the decay is caught in time, the cavity will be filled. But if the cavity is not properly treated and progresses to the gum, then a root canal will be needed to save the tooth. Decay, if left untreated, can turn into gingivitis, which is inflammation and infection of the gums. And gingivitis, in turn, can progress into periodontal disease, which can result in the loss of teeth and bone.

Regular dental visits will ensure that any problems with the teeth and gums are detected in time to treat them before damage has been done. The dentist will also examine and screen the mouth for signs of oral cancer. Patients who are afflicted with HIV especially need to look after their dental care, as dental issues can develop more easily because of a compromised immune system. Good oral hygiene is important for everyone.
