Scaling and root planing is a procedure commonly used to fight gum disease. Scaling helps remove plaque and tartar, as well as stains, from the surface of the teeth. Root planing helps smooth the rough areas around the roots. In severe cases antibiotics are used to help fight periodontal disease.
