Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Warning Signs of Gum DiseaseGum disease can create serious problems in the mouth if left untreated. There are certain signs to look for that will be a warning of problems to come.
Redness, swelling and tenderness of the gums may be the first indication of disease. If gums also bleed easily when brushing and flossing, this is another red flag. Should you notice, when looking in the mirror, that your gums seem to be receding and pulling away from your teeth, this is yet another warning sign.

When gum disease starts to progress, you may notice your teeth beginning to separate or becoming loose. Chronic bad breath occurs due to infection, and pus may actually start to form along the gumline. Mouth sores may develop as well. All of these conditions point to a problem with the gums that warrant immediate attention in order to avoid loss of teeth and bone.

Additional warning signs of gum disease would be experiencing a change in the fit of your teeth when you bite, along with a change in the way any dental appliances, such as partial dentures, fit in your mouth.

Gum disease, if detected and treated early, can be reversed before any damage has been done. If periodontal disease is allowed to progress to a more advanced level, intensive procedures will be required to treat the condition and restore the gums to a state of good health.

With routine visits to the dentist and good oral hygiene habits, gum disease need not be a problem.
