What to Eat to Stop Cavities

What to Eat to Stop CavitiesA healthy diet will strengthen your teeth from the inside out and help to prevent cavities. By avoiding foods that promote the growth of bacteria, you are also protecting your teeth from the outside.

Any food that builds strong bones will build strong teeth. Calcium will help to keep your teeth strong and is especially important for young children. But it is also important for adults to have a certain amount of calcium in their diet every day. Orange juice, leafy green vegetables, milk and yogurt all contain calcium. If you are watching your weight, milk and yogurt that are low in fat content would be a good choice.

Vitamins C and D will help the teeth to stay strong. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits and certain vegetables, such as broccoli. Vitamin D is in most commercial brands of milk.

Fluoride has been known to strengthen teeth and is found in drinking water and toothpastes. It has been proven through various studies that people who live in areas where fluoride has been added to the water have fewer cavities.

Sugar can cause cavities, and it would be wise not to overdo on foods that contain an abundance of it. When you do have a sugary snack, brushing your teeth immediately after eating will help to protect your teeth.

Be watchful of your intake of complex carbohydrates, as they can be detrimental to your teeth also. Potato chips and crackers can be eaten, but remember to brush afterward.
